The Story of Us by Tara Sivec

Blurb:
How much can a man take before he breaks?
1,843 days. That’s how long I survived in that hellhole. They tried to break me, but I resisted. And I owe it all to the memory of warm summer nights, the scent of peaches, and the one woman who loved me more than I ever deserved to be loved. Now, I’ll do anything to get back to her.
Only Shelby Eubanks isn’t the girl I left behind all those years ago. She’s someone else, a stranger. My Shelby-my little green-eyed firecracker-would never give up her dreams, would never disappear into her mother’s ambitions. But I won’t give up on her. On us. I may be broken, and scarred, and not the man I used to be, but I will do whatever it takes to remind her of the story of us.

The feels, it got me…  The Story of Us is a beautiful, endearing and an emotional read.  During a difficult time, they hold on to their memories to get through the ordeal.
A Stable Hand and a Silver Spoon. You wouldn’t think those two combinations would work.  But underneath, you have two passionate people that have such a strong chemistry that could endure anything.  Eli and Shelby are strong together.  Many things in common but basically living on the wrong side of the tracks.   But Shelby didn’t care about that.  She didn’t care about money, politics or social settings. She cared about Eli.   And she wanted to protect him.
But when you grease political pockets, anything could happen. With holding on to a memory,  Eli pulled his strength from the past with spending time with Shelby.  The happy times and the peach scents. Luck was on his side and he came out from the dark side. When returning from overseas, Eli is determined who is responsible for being held against his will.
Quite a few twists and turns.   I was shocked at one point that I didn’t see what was coming with certain characters.  I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.  The Story of Us was definitely a book hangover for me.

Elijah James was a struggling teenager working to help support his sister at the stables of the Eubanks Plantation while Shelby was the only daughter of the owners, a would be socialite with a streak of rebellion, a girl not ready to comply with her mother’s wishes.
After years of knowing each other, they share one summer together when Shelby returns from college.  They are separatedat the end of it, but, when he returns after 6 years in which they both have suffered greatly, he finds a very different woman than the one he once fell in love with.  Both Shelby and Eli go through a lot of loss and sacrifice while falling prey to the manipulations of one unsavory character.
The Story of Us is a book about a second chance for two people separated by much more than fate and circumstance.  This is a story about love, courage, pain and survival told with a nostalgic view of the moments that built the characters’ relationship.
I have to say I’m not really a fan of military related books and the unravelling of this story proved my reasons as I was gutted by everything Eli has brought back with him.  Both he and Shelby have their own personal tragedies and, when they get their second chance, they bring each other back from the darkness they have been living in and learn to accept that you can rely in each other in order to move forward.  This is a great story that honors the power of the human spirit and how peoplecan overcome the worst tragedies with the love and support of their loved ones if they only allow it to happen.
