New Release+ Review: It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
About the Book:
Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.
Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all-too-human characters, It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.
Growing up Lily had it rough, her father was abusive to her mother. Lily had a lot of resentment towards her father. She also judge her mother for staying in an abusive relationship. This causes a strain on their relationship. Lily also in secret takes care and falls in love with a homeless boy named Atlas.
A few years later on the day her father dies and she’s sitting on the rooftop and she meets Ryle. They are both having a bad day and need an escape. They strike up a convo. As soon as things get good Ryle is called into work. A few months later they are reconnected. Lily unbeknownst to her hires his sister, Allysa to work at her new floral shop. Lily and Ryle reconnect and start to see each other slowly.
One day on a date they bump into Atlas. Growing up Atlas was Lily’s first love. He was homeless and living in the vacant house next door. Lily took care of him, brought him food, let him shower at his house and saves his soul. They eventually develop a romantic relationship but it doesn’t last long. Atlas leaves for Boston since he’s a little older than Lily. Lily writes about their story in her journal which she shares with her.
Lily and Ryle have the makings of a wonderful relationship. Everything is going great until that night. Ryle gets upset with Lily and pushes her and she hits her head. Like a classic abuser he apologizes over and over. Lily forgives him and tells him if it ever happens again she’s leaving. She feels he isn’t like her father and it’s a one time thing. Sadly this isn’t the case. Things get worse and my heart broke for Lily. She tried so hard to not be like her mother and found herself in the same situation. I wished she had the courage to tell her mother sooner and get the strength to leave.
“In the future . . . if by some miracle you ever find yourself in the position to fall in love again . . . fall in love with me.””
Lily has a bad night after Ryle goes into a drunken rage. Insert Atlas to the rescue. I’ve been rooting for Atlas this whole book! He loves Lily and took care of her in her time of need. It was his turn to be a safe haven for Lily. This was the point of the book where I thought she would choose Atlas but things are complicated. Yup you guessed it she is pregnant by Ryle!!!!! At this point I was screaming and asking myself WHY!!!!! So after a 15 minute break I resumed.
“If Ryle truly loves you, he wouldn’t allow you to take him back.”
“Be that girl, Lily. Brave and bold.”
Lily and Ryle decided it would be best to spend sometime apart. Ryle goes off to London and Lily conceals her pregnancy. When she finally tells her mom she’s pregnant and all the stuff that was going on, talk about tears!! The whole time she thought her mom was weak for staying but she realized how strong she truly was. Lily need her mom so bad in this moment and I’m happy she finally delivered.
“Cycles exist because they are excruciating to break. It takes an astronomical amount of pain and courage to disrupt a familiar pattern. Sometimes it seems easier to just keep running in the same familiar circles, rather than facing the fear of jumping and possibly not landing on your feet.”
“It stops here. With me and you. It ends with us.”
This book way up until the very end had me on the edge. I honestly didn’t know what was going to happen. Lily had been through so much, was pregnant and emotional plus she still loved Ryle. Despite all the abuse she knew he was a good guy and his good they could be. When Lily finally make her decision to leave for good I was so happy. She made the best decision for her child. This scene was heartbreaking as well. I thought I would be happy and be like so long sucka but I wasn’t.
“You can stop swimming now, Lily. We finally reached the shore.”
The book had the ending I hoped for from the very beginning. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. This book was typical Colleen Hoover Gold! I haven’t felt this way about a book since I read Hopeless. Her writing, the emotions, the feels the everything. This book really makes you open your eyes and think about A LOT! The way we treat our loved ones. The way we could show more compassion to others less fortunate. How we are quick to judge someone in a certain situation without being in the situation ourselves. This book makes you reexamine a lot about yourself and what you can do to be a better person. Fans of Hoovers older books will definitely love this one!!
