New Release+Review: I DO(N’T) By Leddy Harper

BLURBI fell in love with Holden York when I was six years old.

Most of my youth came with spiral notebooks filled with doodles, wedding plans, and “Janelle York” looped in bubbly handwriting.

However, one night in Vegas changed everything.

I woke up to more than just a fantasy of my brother’s best friend.

Five years later, I’m standing on his doorstep confronting him about the secret he kept from me.

If you think this is the story of how we rode off into the sunset together…
You’re so wrong.

But if you think this is the story of how Holden blackmailed me into living with him…
You couldn’t be more right.

Janelle Brewer has been in love with her brother’s best friend for a long time, like since she was in Kindergarten and he was a strapping 10 year-old. She thought she’d outgrown him on her teenage years until she got dumped right before prom and he came to her rescue.
Holden York has been part of the Brewer clan since a young age. While his parental units were unavailable, the Brewers provided a safe haven for him and he’s never felt like anything but family with them.
They were the best of friends until one night in Vegas everything changed and now she’s back in town, after 5 years away to find her relationship with her family is frail at best and the man she trusted with her secrets is willing to hold her hostage to keep her in town.
This was my first read by the author. I came to this book attracted by the blurb, but I have to say it was not what I expected. The premise was somewhat interesting, but I found the delivery inconsistent. It’s funny at times, but the back and forth and indecision of the characters had me rather confused. Neither of them could come clean about the pain they inflicted each other with their actions or the consequences of those actions and they felt bland at best. At the end of the day, I liked Holden better because he was so sweet and I feel he redeemed himself closer to the end.
IMO the story had a lot of potential, but it was lost in the execution. It has funny, heartfelt and sexy moments, but I found the whole lacking for my taste.

AUTHOR BIO

Leddy Harper had to use her imagination often as a child. She grew up the only girl in a house full of boys. At the age of fourteen, she decided to use that imagination and wrote her first book, and never stopped.

She often calls writing her therapy, using it as a way to deal with issues through the eyes of her characters.

She is now a mother of three girls, leaving her husband as the only man in a house full of females.

The decision to publish her first book was made as a way of showing her children to go after whatever it is they want to. Love what you do and do it well. Most importantly Leddy wanted to teach them what it means to overcome their fears.
