When girl meets duke, their marriage breaks all the rules....

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury's to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne'er-do-wells by night. Now there's a new item on the list. He needs an heir - which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

His terms are simple:

They will be husband and wife by night only.
No lights, no kissing.
No questions about his battle scars.
Last, and most importantly...once she's pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.
But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:

They will have dinner together every evening.
With conversation.
And unlimited teasing.
Last, and most importantly...once she's seen the man beneath the scars, he can't stop her from falling in love.

Review:

I’ve heard great things about this book and I heard the audio was really good. So I’m happy to report this book was a winner. Both characters have tough exteriors only to hide what’s really inside and I loved seeing them bring each other walls down. Emma was feisty, stubborn, headstrong but had a heart of gold. I love how she was always trying to help others when Lord knows she didn’t has to after everything she’s been through. Ash was a tortured soul and so infuriating at times. But then the layers get pulled back and see his reasoning and it makes your heart tug. I really enjoyed this story but I’m not going to lie when I say I didn’t really care for the one subplot of the story. It kinda of threw the story off for me. Overall, this was my first time reading this author but it won’t be my last. I’m not a big fan of historical romances but this story held my attention from the very beginning to the end. I can’t wait to dive into the next book! I have to say this was my first time listening to this narrator and Wells knocked it out the park! I loved the way she portrayed each character and she nailed all the emotional scenes. Not too many women can perform male characters and Wells did an excellent job with the Duke of Ashbury.
