Synopsis

Millie is
unlucky in love and when her long term relationship ends like a soap opera
story line, she takes drastic action.
She applies for an overseas job as home school teacher on an American
family Ranch and finds herself instantly attracted to Jesse-her boss.  As for Jesse, well he doesn’t need her getting
in his business and constantly reminding him that he neglects his daughter.
In Jesse
Connor’s eyes his life would be simple if it consisted of three things.  His ranch, his cattle and his horses.  But it doesn’t- for one, there’s his young
daughter, Adeline, who is fighting for his love and attention because he’s the
only parent she has.  Then there is Millie
Braithwaite-that damn beautiful English woman.
Millie &
Jesse are two broken souls who are both fighting against the inevitable,
because they both know that this time their hearts could be shattered beyond
repair.
Box of Hearts is
the first book in the Connor Ranch series and tells the story of second chance
love and the joy and sorrow it can bring.

First time reading Nikki Ashton and I’m hooked.  Two souls and second chances for love, your heart will sore for Millie and Jesse.  Beautiful written with a man who was lost emotionally and the woman  who helped him in need.
Millie is a strong woman who had a heart of gold but was unlucky with love.  With being hired to homeschool Addy, she felt for the child by the emotionally absent father.  The Connor family pulled together in a time of need and was always there for the precious Addy.   Millie wasn’t afraid to stand her ground even though she pushed Jesse’s personal boundaries.  Through time and the help of Millie, Jesse realized how much time he missed with his daughter.  He loved Addy’s mother and still kept her on a pedestal even though she was dead.  But he kept having strong loving feelings for Millie that made him feel guilty to his deceased wife.  With some eye opening events, he realized what he thought was true wasn’t.
At the end of Box of Hearts was twists and turns. When you think best friends have your back, they don’t.  It was very touching how Addy knew when to give a heart to someone that was ready to explore love.  She definitely was a gifted little girl!!

When Millie Braithwaite finds herself dumped at the altar and the talk of her hometown in England, she decides to accept an employment offer in a small town in the USA taking care of a precocious 4 year old.
Jesse Connor lost his wife 2 years ago in an accident and he’s still grieving.  He keeps himself numb with long work hours and meaningless sexual encounters, but not even the unconditional love of his precious little girl has been able to bring him back to the man he used to be.
Millie and Jesse feel the attraction to one another, but they know this can be messy, not to mention that Jesse only want to be friends with benefits.  He knows she deserves more than that and tries to stay away, but once they fall into each other’s arms it becomes harder and harder to stay away.
This is my first read by this author and I have to say I just loved this story.  I was hooked up from the prologue and it was hard for me to put down, but, more than that, to see it come to an end.
I loved Millie and Jesse and, though I wanted to throat punch him more than once throughout the book because of his push and pull behavior and also because even a blind man could see what was right in front of his face, I also understood his grief and the difficulties he was confronting to move on.  Despite this fact, I still loved him because he had amazing qualities as well.  Then there’s Millie with her big heart full of love for them all, his amazing family and little Addy with an insight that went way beyond her years.
Box of Hearts is one of those books I come to read not knowing what to expect and left me with a great aftertaste.  It was an enjoyable story full of candor and family love.  It is funny, heartfelt and thoroughly romantic and I can’t wait to come back to Connor Ranch!
