Tropes

One girl disappeared. After fifteen years, her cold lifeless body was found on the damp forest floor. Not an inch of her was unmarked by the horrors she endured. Alone, malnourished, abused in horrific ways; this was how she died.

One girl was found walking the streets, covered in dirt and scars. She had no memory of who she was, where she came from, or what happened to her. Even though the marks on her body attested to years of heinous abuse, her strength shone through at every turn.

Revenge and justice were sworn.

Years of searching brought up nothing but dead ends. Detective Niko James was too late to save his childhood friend, but he vows not to let down another.

The clock is ticking and the trail is pitch dark.

*This book contains dark triggers.*

Niko James had a childhood friend and, while everyone thought her a runaway, he knew deep in his gut she’d been kidnapped.  Then he grew up and became a police officer.
Now a detective, with years under his belt in the department, a dead girl is found in the woods and another one is found wandering the streets near his home.  The similarities lead him to believe there is a relation and, once again, he’ll trust his gut rather than what his colleagues are telling him.
This book is a full-length standalone touching a lot of sensitive issues.  It’s one, if not the most, difficult book I’ve ever read, dealing in highly descriptive detail with physical and emotional abuse, but it is nonetheless a powerful read.
Personally, friendship is one of the biggest and most important relationships in my life and the bond between Aislin and Niko touched my heart deeply.  Both these characters are strong in their own right, relentless in their fight and I suffered with them every step of their journey.
This is a dark and gripping tale of love, pure and selfless on one side and misguided and sick on the other, but still love no matter what.  It brought out feelings of sadness, hopelessness and fear, but I still power through it and really liked how the story developed and ended.  It is definitely not for everyone, but if you can deal with your most delicate sensibilities, I think it’s worth every minute of your time and reading every last word.
