Simmer (verb): to stew gently below or just at the boiling point; to be in a state of incipient development

My life was always at a simmer… only stewing, never going anywhere. I was left to fend for myself when it came to affection or love, so I learned to go without.

I refused to let them see how broken and lonely I was; it was much easier to hide behind a false reality. I didn't want anyone's pity. I didn't need it. Pity wouldn't put food on the table or keep a roof over our heads. That was all me.

Now, I have a second chance at a dream long forgotten. It demands hard work and sacrifice—with absolutely no distractions. A recipe I already know all too well, raising a daughter on my own.

Drew Kostas is everything I’ve ever wanted but couldn't let myself have. He’s younger, gorgeous, charming—and relentless. He sees beyond the hardened shell I’ve built to protect myself, coaxing out a softer me I don't recognize.
It doesn't matter how I melt in his presence when the heat between us threatens to boil over.

That's the thing about heat. When it rises, everyone gets burned.

Especially when they're foolish enough to fall in love.

Beth’s Review:

I didn’t know what to expect when I started Simmer. And I was so taken back with the story of Sara and Drew. Sara was dealt a horrible hand. Not being loved, supported and basically broken. She closed off her heart to everyone except her daughter. Sara didn’t see Drew chip away that hard exterior. Before she knew it, she was knee deep in love with a man she thought she would never have in her life.

Being a single mom and going from job to job, she wanted to provide for her daughter. With finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, Sara had an opportunity to get her degree in Culinary. But that meant that Victoria would be living with her father, Josh while Sara was at college. Sara finally was living the college life. Even though she was a lot older than the other students, she was determined and focused to graduate. What she didn’t expect was Drew.

Drew was determined to break down Sara’s walls. He knew she had a rough childhood and upbringing. They became friends. But that friendship opened the door to a romantic relationship. They were passionate. Even they had an age gape, it didn’t matter to him. It was just a number. But he knew Sara’s primary purpose was her daughter. That didn’t stop him from falling in love with both of them.

I really enjoyed Simmer. Simmer was well written. First time reader of Stephanie Rose. And I will be definitely be reading more.
